Around half of all men and women will be affected by hair loss at some point in their lives. There are a whole host of possible causes such as genetics, illness or simply the ageing process. However, certain vitamin deficiencies can also cause the thinning of the hair and hair loss.
Some vitamins are excellent for restoring strength to hair and for encouraging hair growth. You can get many of these types of vitamins in supplements, but they can also be found in foods. Eating a varied and healthy diet will ensure that you are receiving a healthy balance of vitamins and minerals.
Vitamin C for Hair Loss
Carrots, citrus fruits, broccoli and kale are all excellent sources of Vitamin C which is a powerful antioxidant. Antioxidants help to fight the ageing process and combat the reactive free radical molecules which damage the DNA structure. Vitamin C works against the oxidative stress which can cause grey hair, hair thinning and hair loss.
Vitamin D for Hair Growth
It is well known that many alopecia sufferers have also been found to be severely lacking in Vitamin D which is a hormone that plays an important role in cell growth. The best source of Vitamin D is sunlight, but you can also find it in fish such as halibut, salmon and mackerel as well as certain mushrooms.
Omega-3 for Hair Growth
The fats found in Omega-3 help to nourish and thicken the hair as well as working to reduce the inflammation of the roots which often causes hair loss. Omega-3 can be found in foods such as tuna, white fish and eggs, among others. You can also take Omega-3 supplements if your diet does not regularly include oily fish.
Zinc for Hair Growth
Zinc is vital for hair follicle health. Not only does it keep the hair follicle healthy and support the workings of the follicle, but it also helps to reduce hair follicle regression which can cause hair loss. Zinc also accelerate hair follicle regeneration so if you are suffering hair loss or thinning, then zinc can help the hair follicles to recover and your hair to begin to regrow. While zinc can be found in many vegetables, you may need to take a supplement to bring up enough levels to really affect hair regrowth.
B-complex vitamin (biotin and B5)
Biotin and B5 work well together to combat the effects of hair loss as biotin work to repair the hair shingles from the effects of sun damage, over-shampooing, dyeing and use of heat from drying and styling. Vitamin B5 supports the adrenal glands which in turn, help to stimulate hair growth. Biotin is often found in special shampoos along with Vitamin B5, which can also be absorbed from food or supplements.
